With architectural roots at the Pratt Institute School of Architecture in Brooklyn, design foundation in Rome and hands-on experience in Los Angeles, Douglas Kohlman is a design consultant with a passion for “the pure joy and pleasure when a client goes along for the ride.” That is to say, when Douglas is one with a client together they can realize a vision.

 

After spending 17 years in Los Angeles in a successful business assisting clients in interior and exterior design, as well as working in the entertainment industry as a set decorator, production designer and art director, Douglas started to feel the East Coast beckon. After an economic downturn and a writers’ strike affecting the industry, he was certain it was time for a change in scenery.

 

“I was looking for ‘the next thing’ in life,” Douglas said. “On a trip to Amelia Island, I had seen a house and property in Fernandina that I could see myself settling into for good while. The next time I was here, it was for sale. It was a sign, so I bought it.”

 

That was 10 years ago. He has re-joined immediate family that had also settled in Amelia Island previously, as well as family in Virginia. “Amelia Island reminds me a lot of glorious childhood summers spent in Nags Head [North Carolina], and surrounding area beaches” Douglas said. “There is a familiar and very comforting kind of feeling, and a nice sense of community I get living here.”

 

There is also a good base from which to continue his design consultancy business. With his local clients, Douglas continues to incorporate his love of design and architectural training into all facets of interior and exterior design through space, form, proportion, light and color. He approaches each project with an eclectic mix of the new, coupled with his knowledge of design history to create beautiful spaces and overall alluring environments.
